In fact, if you read the specifications, it explicitly states that AC'97 and Intel High Definition Audio cannot be mixed on the same controller. In any case, if you're using Analog out, the DAC will be what matters when it comes to audio quality, not whether it's AC'97 or not. And if you're using the optical out, you're getting bit-for-bit the same audio data regardless of what sound card you're using (unless you like real-time post-processing your audio on the sound card; but then audiophiles probably wouldn't do that anyway).

Last time I checked, the optical output wouldn't allow true 5.1 audio. It could be used it to play Dolby Surround DVDs (which have a restricted bandwidth), but it wouldn't allow applications and games to use the 5.1 speaker system in a true surround sound mode.
